Red Shorts and Navy

Red pants and shorts have had a bit of a presence in preppy vernacular for a while.  It's interesting that certain colors tend to permeate different styles.  Muted yellows, muddied greens and blues tend to be seen in bohemian fashion as it reminds us of the earth. I think the reason red (on pants and shorts in particular) has made an impression in preppy style is because, in true preppy tradition, it is a primary color.  And secondly, red pants and shorts are a way to wear a traditional color in an unexpected way.  This is where preppy fashion works its magic in holding our interest throughout time.

The shorts have an added detail of small embroidered navy "ships helms" throughout.  Such a fun detail that adds a subtle sartorial ode to a summer pastime.  I paired the shorts together with a navy Lilly Pulitzer spaghetti strap racer back top.  It's got a crinkle texture to it, and I feel like a top like this adds to the shorts, rather than a plain navy t-shirt, making it more of an outfit.  I usually always style pieces like this with a cardigan of some sort, partly because I get chilly easily; if you're going shopping or to the movies the air conditioning is on full blast.  Another reason I usually always have a cardigan handy is because the layering element completes the outfit. I purchased the cardigan from Lilly Pulitzer to match the navy top perfectly.  And finally, the tote bag. There's a reason the bag I'm carrying by Lonchamp has been a favorite for so long.  The Le Pliage tote is nylon with leather handles, so it cleans (and packs away neatly) so well! I don't mind wearing navy with black at all, in fact, it's a favorite pairing for me!

You can find a similar cardigan from Lilly Pulitzer here

The shorts are British Khaki from Marshalls (all Marshalls stores carry different stock, you'll have to dig, or call the store to see if they have any British Khaki shorts in).  But if you aren't in the mood to search around there's a red chino pair here (sans embroidery) and a navy pair here (with embroidery!)

You can have your pick of colors in the Le Pliage tote here  you can also personalize your bag!
